My
only reservation, as the parent of a disabled child, is that I have never been
to a young children’s/family museum activity which my daughter can access, due
to them always being on the floor. My daughter is a wheelchair
user.
Also,
if the parent/grandparent/carer is disabled, they can’t access the activity or
support the child either.
So
floor-based activities do exclude many families with
disabilities.
Floor
based activities are okay, but there are access issues
which have to be thought through.

Activities
Hi Amanda,
Miranda’s advice is spot on.
If you are looking for more examples I would say that from
both professional and personal experience that ‘Curiosity’ is a huge hit at
Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and is aimed at under sevens. From
observation I would say under 5s use it most. Jane Hack from BMAG might want to
comment on this!
I don’t know what kind of budget it was but it is
particularly safe as the children are able to enjoy a space dedicated to them
that is zoned off and has a tiny gate!
You might find this blog inspiring from a user’s
perspective:
Apologies for the delay, I have been
away.
Hope this helps,
Helen

Hello
All,
Has anyone got – or
had in the past – floor based activities for very young children are in an
unsupervised gallery area. I am after some concrete evidence that this
works and is not a H&S issue in order to fight the tide of opposition I am
facing currently.
I know I can rely
on you!
