Chris makes some good points in his article. It's worth noting that reasonably well-known figures including the right wing commentator Toby Young and the left wing comedian Mark Steel were both turned down for Labour membership on the grounds that they allegedly didn't support the party's aims. Both attempted to register in order to vote for Jeremy Corbyn - albeit for very different reasons! As both individuals have well documented political opinions which are in the public domain you could argue that there is no DP issue for the party to answer to here. However in the case of less well known individuals not in the public eye who were turned down without a sufficient explanation then the party certainly does need to review its DP/privacy policies.

Voting for Jeremy? Labour Party's vetting ensures approved voters score low Marx

Just published on Hawktalk: http://amberhawk.typepad.com/amberhawk

A Labour spokesman has just told the BBC that the Party was confident "the processes of verification and handling applications (to vote in the leadership election) are compliant with the Data Protection Act".

I will leave readers to judge this issue but I am not so sure.
