PhD Student (m/w) Bioinformatics / Biostatistics

The research group translational bioinformatics in psychiatry is looking for a PhD student (m/f) starting on 1. December 2015. The position is limited to 2 years.

The Central Institute of Mental Health is an internationally renowned Research Institute in the Field of psychiatry and neuroscience, psychiatric-psychotherapeutic-psychosomatic department of the medical faculty Mannheim of the Heidelberg University as well as a psychiatric-psychotherapeutic-psychosomatic clinic distributed across four sections: psychiatry und psychotherapy, psychosomatics and psychotherapeutic medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy in childhood and adolescence as well as addictive behavior and addiction medicine.

A central aim of this research group is the investigation of trans-diagnostic patient subgroups based on underlying biological processes for dimensional reconstruction of psychotic disorders. For this purpose, we focus on the development and application of statistical and bioinformatics methods for integrative analysis of genome-wide genetics and functional as well as structural neuroimaging data. We aim to optimally integrate biological meta-data in an extensive multi-modal database amenable for quantitative analysis to obtain deeper insight into illness-associated processes.


Responsibilities

  • Database development and analysis for identification of multimodal, biological signatures of psychiatric illnesses
  • Analysis of biological networks for identification of illness-relevant biological modules
  • Writing of scientific publications


Requirements

  • Masters or Diploma degree in (bio-) statistics / bioinformatics / applied mathematics
  • Good knowledge of database development
  • Good statistical programming skills (especially in R)
  • Enthusiasm for independent scientific research, publication writing and demanding statistical analysis tasks.
  • Experience in statistical data analysis desirable (preferentially in the field of genetics)
  • Talent in organization and ability to work in a team
  • Command of the German language is not required

 


Terms and conditions

 An interesting position at a leading research institute. Salary is based on the German TV-L pay scale, including the social benefits of the German public service sector.
