Senior Biostatistician (Grade 6)

Duties:

· Developing his/her own independent methodological research in the field of biostatistics;

· actively contributing to the design and organisation of new research, including the preparation of research protocols, sampling methods, questionnaire design and data handling procedures;

· providing expert advice on data management and statistical analysis;

· undertaking statistical analyses of data from observational and experimental studies, interpreting the results and preparing the results for publication;

· contributing to disseminating research results using appropriate channels, including peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations and engagement with policy makers;

· contributing to the preparation of new grant proposals;

· supervising postgraduate students and providing mentorship to junior staff;

· contributing to training and teaching in biostatistics.

 

Requirements:

· PhD in Biostatistics or Statistics with a strong record of research demonstrated by publications in peer reviewed journals and collaborations in peer-reviewed funded projects;

· demonstrated practical experience of data analysis including the analysis of large and complex datasets using standard statistical software (Stata, SAS, SPSS, etc.);

· experience in the application and teaching of biostatistics in health research and biostatistical consultation with clinical investigators are important attributes;

· as a prerequisite, the position requires an excellent record of collegiality and collaboration, a comprehensive understanding of clinical research designs, and a willingness to learn and understand

research needs specific to various clinical areas that include infectious diseases, chronic diseases of lifestyle and injuries.

 

Recommendations: 

· Previous experience in conducting systematic reviews and undertaking meta-analysis;

· previous extensive experience in the design and analysis of research in infectious diseases, especially HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis;

· knowledge of epidemiology and experience in supporting postgraduate students;

· excellent communication and presentation skills;

· familiarity with evidence-based research principles and methodologies;

· the ability to collaborate effectively with people from a wide range of disciplines and to work effectively in a multicultural environment;

· co-authorship of scientific publications in high impact factor journals.
