Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

School of Public Health

Research Associate in Statistics for Environmental Epidemiology

Salary Range: £33,410 - £42,380 per annum

This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher with a PhD or equivalent in statistics or a related quantitative subject to join the research team at the national MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health (http://www.environment-health.ac.uk/). The post is based within the Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU; www.sahsu.org.uk), a part of the Centre and will be line managed by Dr Anna Hansell and Dr Marta Blangiardo.

The work programme encompasses a broad range of projects, which use advanced computing, GIS and statistical methods, and specialised procedures to enhance exposure assessment for environmental epidemiological studies. Examples of two projects you will have the opportunity to work on are investigating reproductive health effects associated with municipal incinerators and investigating small area variations and space-time clusters of childhood onset diabetes in England and Wales. You will also provide statistical support to various other projects within the Centre. The post offers a unique opportunity to gain in-depth experience of using routine health data and sophisticated exposure assessment and statistical analysis methods for epidemiological research, with scope for developing your own research proposals depending on level of appointment.

You should have a good working knowledge of modern applied statistical techniques (e.g. hierarchical Bayesian models, spatial models for small area studies) and experience of analysing epidemiological/biomedical data for research purposes. Experience of environmental and reproductive epidemiology and the use of specialised procedures to enhance exposure assessment is desirable. Applicants should be  motivated and extremely organised with experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.

This full-time post is based at the St Mary’s Campus, Paddington and will be fixed term for one year in the first instance (with possibility of renewal).
