Dear Chris and Trevor, Serum/Plasma Albumin Reference Intervals Information (not very useful at this stage - but current activities down under) 1. RCPAQAP Reference Intervals Survey results (see figures). All BCP assays highlighted in Yellow. Note lack of uniformity in Australia and New Zealand in 2015 (total 105 labs, 28 using BCP). Commonest LRL and URL are 35 and 48 (but not by much). [cid:image001.png@01D0DBEB.2C5EEB40][cid:image002.png@01D0DBEB.2C5EEB40] 2. AACB Harmonisation Group. Recognise need for separate intervals for BCP and BCG (results too different to share intervals). Also recognise need for age-related intervals due to falling levels in the elderly. Suggest a drop at age 65 or 70. No recommendations for albumin intervals for this group (yet). Dear Colleagues We recently changed from BCG to BCP plasma albumin, initially without any problems. Subsequently, however rheumatologists have expressed concern at the number of low (below adult reference interval) results in the absence of other evidence of liver disease. These may potentially direct further invasive investigations at least according to some guidelines. It brings two questions into focus: 1. Is the adult reference interval set too high? We use 34-48 g/L as per manufacturer's instructions. We are canvassing what other centres are using and where the ranges come from. 1. Have other centres had similar concerns from rheumatologists? Any comments or feedback appreciated.
