THE 7TH NORTHERN ENGLISHES WORKSHOP

* University of Edinburgh
* 14th - 15th April, 2016

Organisers: Warren Maguire ([log in to unmask]) and Patrick Honeybone ([log in to unmask])

The 7th Northern Englishes Workshop (NEW7) will be held at the University of Edinburgh on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th of April, 2016. Like previous workshops, NEW7 will focus on research on the 'linguistic North’ of England, from the English-Scottish border to as far south as you can justify (this thus excludes research dealing with Scotland and Ireland unless it concerns relations with Northern England).

In keeping with its workshop nature, informal presentations/discussions about ongoing research bearing on any issue relating to English in Northern England (dialectological, historical, sociolinguistic, structural, perceptual, etc.) as well as conference-style research presentations will be welcome. A call for papers for NEW7 will be made shortly.

NEW7 will include a special half day session on the linguistic analysis of Northern English dialect literature (from the 18th century onwards). Dialect literature comprises a very substantial (historical and contemporary) dataset for Northern English dialects, but its linguistic analysis is only in its infancy. If you are interested in presenting in this special session, please contact us now, using the email addresses above, to discuss options.

Details of our website and the full call for papers will follow.
