Research Assistant, Public Faith and Finance

A Research Assistant position is available in the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship, in the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies, at the University of Bristol.

 

The successful applicant will join a research team working on the project ‘Public Faith and Finance, funded by the Barrow Cadbury Trust, led by Dr Therese O’Toole (PI, University of Bristol) and Dr Stephen Jones (CI, Newman University).

 

Public faith and finance is an 8-month project examining the role that faith organisations are playing in the development of alternative approaches to finance provision, and explores the contribution they make to building sustainable and socially just economic systems in three areas:

 

·         Campaigning with the aim of creating a more sustainable and/or socially just financial sector (e.g., improving regulation of financial services);

·         Advocacy of alternative financial systems (e.g., Islamic finance);

·         Involvement in the provision of financial products and support (e.g., credit unions and other forms of microfinance, financial literacy services or debt counselling).

 

The successful applicant will support the research project in a number of ways, with the primary responsibilities being:

 

·         Working with faith-based organisations and networks to disseminate project aims;

·         Conducting an online survey of faith-based organisations’ activities;

·         Developing and conducting case-studies of faith-based activism on finance issues (involving interviews and documentary analysis with case study organisations);

·         Organising and publicising an event on faith-based organisations and the financial sector;

·         Contributing to the drafting and writing of a project report and findings and dissemination activities.

 

The position is 100% fte and will run from 1st September 2015 to 30th April 2016.
