Full papers must be submitted by 1st December 2015.
Health analysts and social scientists have all studied African Americans and their communities extensively over the past decades because this population has disproportionately high levels of disease, disability, premature death, and exposure to the criminal justice system. Interestingly, there has been little overlap or cross-communication between the literatures even though the very same factors leading to crime and punishment among African American males often contribute to their poor physical and mental health profiles.
The editors for this forthcoming volume seek to include chapters that draw from theoretical and methodological frameworks in the health, social and behavioral sciences to illustrate how poor outcomes among individuals and communities can be linked to the interplay of multiple factors operating at multiple levels. Scholars are invited to contribute studies utilizing original quantitative and qualitative research methods as well as theoretical and conceptual review articles that will further broaden our understanding of the relationship between inequality, crime, punishment, and health. We encourage work that explores the causally relevant intersectionality(ies) among race, ethnic and race relations, economic inequality, gender, and community setting, etc. as they affect the life chances of African American males throughout the life course.
Proposed topic areas or trend analyses for which submissions are requested include , but are not limited to, homicide, nonlethal intentional assaultive injury, suicide, mental health, AIDS, health effects of alcohol and drug abuse, health-related exposure to environmental hazards, etc. We also seek papers that examine the ways in which the social control of African American males in the form of arrests, sentencing ,correctional confinement and their aftermath affect marriage, family cohesion and stability, and the economic standing of black males (and females) and the communities in which they live.
