If the Rule prohibits a particular practice, then it’s a good bet that it was something that was happening regularly! There is quite a bit relating to conduct at meals.

Earlier I mentioned Barbara Harvey's Living and dying in England 1100-1540 : the monastic experience (1993), but I'm not sure if my message came through. Anyway, another interesting feature of her book is the explanation of how Westminster monks circumvented various food provisions of the Rule by dividing the community into sections and taking turns for a section to have their meals outside the refectory, where it was considered that the food regulations did not apply. -- Paul
