There really are other search tools that can give you better results. Who should attend?: This workshop is for anyone who wants to explore alternatives to Google and ensure that they are finding the most relevant information for their query. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience and the strategies covered can be applied to all subject areas. Course outline Having problems with Google? Suspect you are not seeing the whole picture? There are times when Google is the worst possible tool for researching a project, and there really are alternative tools and strategies that can give better results. This workshop will look at the options for carrying out research using alternatives to Google for general web search, and specialist tools for subject areas and different types of information. The workshop will cover: - Alternative web search tools - features, strengths and weaknesses - Specialist tools for research papers, scientific and technical information, business information - Official information - Statistics and open data - Image search tools - Video, news, alerts and current awareness - The role of social media and professional networks - Web archives There will be time to experiment and try out the techniques for yourself and Karen will be on hand to help and advise you. She provides training and consultancy on social and collaborative web tools, and searching for and managing information resources.
