So what is "interpretive writing" anyway?
Here's what makes the writing/label copy for interpretive panels, museum
exhibits, publications, marketing brochures, and AV scripts "interpretive":
1. Interpretive writing is theme based - designed to help illustrate the
main interpretive theme for a site, park or attraction in which the media
you're writing for is a part of.
2. Interpretive writing is based on Tildens' Interpretive Principles
(remember him?). That means interpretive writing has a general format: Provoke
attention and curiosity, Relate to the everyday life of the
reader/visitor, and REVEAL the main point of message through a unique or imaginative
viewpoint at the end of the message/text. To be "interpretive" writing it must
 "Provoke, Relate and Reveal".
3. Interpretive writing is outcome based, and the content of the text is
based on accomplishing interpretive objectives (learning, behavioral and
emotional objectives). How can you create a text or label copy without having
objectives the writing is to accomplish and from which to post test
evaluating the copy to see if it is indeed accomplishing its objectives?
4 Interpretive writing has a strong element of using "intangibles" in its
creation to help strengthen the "RELATE" part of Tilden's Principles.
5. Finally, interpretive writers have learned from research to keep it
short. Interpretive panels are limited to about 100 words of text, and museum
labels to about 50 words of main body text. We know from research that
the only people who usually read all of the text are usually experts looking
for errors (USDA Design Lab Research Study at multiple visitor centers).
For most visitors, the amount of text they want to read is as described based
on observational research and visitor interviews from may student M. S.
thesis.
So, want to learn more about "interpretive writing" and how it can make
your interpretive media and products stronger and more memorable? Then this
course is for you. If you have any questions at all please feel free to
get in touch with me. Happy to chat with you. If you would like to see some
interpretive writing samples let me know
Cheers,
