The prison service, placement provider, will also have a duty of care for all staff, visitors and students and will have their own risk assessment process
Based on these a reasoned decision about the risks associated with this student attending this placement. There is no reason to assume this student with their sighted helper is at any greater risk than any other student in the same setting, and indeed may be safer as there is a second person the sighted helper present.

Subject: VI trainee teacher on prison placement
Hi
A friend who manages a post-compulsory teacher education course has
asked for advice about the following.
A male student who is totally blind is due to begin a teacher training
course in the upcoming academic year. He has asked to be considered for
a placement working in an offender learning setting. This will probably
be in a prison. Although the student will be supported by a sighted
helper, the course manager is concerned about potential health and
safety (i.e.security) issues.
Has anyone encountered a similar situation? Any thoughts/advice would be
gratefully received.
Regards
