70-180mm f/4.5-5.6D AF IF-ED Micro-Nikkor

This has come up on a second hand list and I’ve been asked if I know anything about it. Apparently only a handful were made and 2 seem to have come up together. Can anyone throw any light on the purpose this might have ?
