Hi Sam,

We try to avoid EDTA samples, and advocate lithium heparin syringes/ vacutainers.  High potassium levels from the EDTA can affect the K selective electrode on the Siemens devices and contaminate the pathway.  This can result in carry-over, thus multiple washes & IQC are needed prior to the next routine assay.

Kind regards,

If it is a Trust generated request then it is through a blood gas sample processed immediately normally. Via a GP we accept a lithium heparin or an EDTA sample and we process these within 24 hours of collection. In theory CoHb binds irreversibly so stability shouldn’t be such an issue though I have not verified this. On my list of things to look at!

Hi All

Please can you confirm what sample you accept for Carboxyhaemoglobin, and what stability time-frame you state?

Many thanks

Sam
