Thanks for the reassuring information, Peter.

I take your point about the number of parameters/connections and whether the base model estimation converges. My original 13 VOI base model converged successfully in SPM12b ver. 5616, but not in a couple of the subsequent versions of SPM12 that I tried (including the most recent one). Do you know why that might be?

BTW, it looks as though I don’t have the option to respond to the reviewers for this particular submission and journal, which is annoying given the apparent misinterpretation of what can be done with DCM and the model reduction procedure. I might try anyway, if I can build a strong enough case …
