Hi again

Brilliant: I used them in the session that has just ended!

To clarify – yes, I meant the word in the Demos-approved sense of the word, rather than anything else. Apologies for leaving it hanging.

It’s interesting that there are only a few examples; it’s also interesting that the term “upstream” has not penetrated as far into the collective science communication unconscious as I thought it might have. So many thanks to everyone who responded, even if the response was “You what?”.

And for completeness, in addition to the messages in this thread, a couple of people got back to me on twitter: Patrick Middleton from BBSRC pointed me to their 2010 consultation on Synthetic Biology http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/engagement/dialogue/activities/synthetic-biology/dialogue-background/
Emily Dawson introduced me to the SNEHA Dekha Undekha project in Mumbai http://www.snehamumbai.org/documents/Publications/26/Dekha_Undekha_BookReport.pdfAnd Alice Taylor Gee suggested NERC’s recent geoengineering dialogue exercise http://www.nerc.ac.uk/about/whatwedo/engage/engagement/geoengineering/geoengineering-dialogue-final-report/

I look forward to discussing this with some of you next week at the Sci Comm conference in Manchester!

Perhaps the HFEA consultation on mitochondrial replacement would be an example?

Public consultation ran in 2012: http://www.hfea.gov.uk/9359.html

Maybe this will help define 'upstream'...

I was puzzled too until I Googled it!
