A postdoctoral position is available within the Institute of Methods for Material Development (EM-IMM) at the Helmholtz-Centre Berlin for Material and Energy (HZB). The initial employment term
will be for three years.
A new laboratory is being constructed at HZB to investigate solution phase and interfacial chemical change on its natural, femtosecond, timescale. The focus of the laboratory will be on understanding
biochemical processes and the activities of catalysts and functional materials in their natural/applied environments. The primary duty of the successful candidate will be the construction of an infrared optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA)
laser chain and its application to generate ultrashort soft X-ray pulses. The candidate will also be expected to assist in the generation of lower power, tunable laser pulses spanning the infrared to ultraviolet spectral ranges.
Candidates should have a PhD in physics, engineering or a related discipline and extensive experience with the design, maintenance and operation of ultrafast, high-power laser systems. Experience
with high-power optical parametric amplifiers and the generation, characterisation and delivery of few-cycle laser pulses is a prerequisite for employment. Experience in the following areas is also desirable:
Optical pulse shaping technologies
High harmonic generation
VUV, EUV and/or soft X-ray beam line development
Monochromatisation of broadband, ultrashort light sources
Ultra high vacuum instrumentation
Applications should include a curriculum vitae including a list of publications, a letter of motivation and the contact details of at least three referees. Informal inquiries can be sent to
