Research fellow, History of British nuclear power in international context
Salary £28,679 per annum pro rata

The Science Museum seeks to appoint a post-doctoral researcher as part of a major new project, History of Nuclear Energy and Society (HoNESt) which brings together 23 scholarly institutions across Europe.

HoNESt is dedicated to identifying the factors underlying societal perceptions of nuclear developments and their interrelationship. Within the consortium, The Science Museum will be leading the UK contribution to the work dealing with “History of the civilian production and use of nuclear energy in Europe, 1945-2013; Constructing the narrative”.

Together with Dr Robert Bud at the Museum, you will deliver the Museum’s contribution to this work, liaising closely both with colleagues across Europe and with social scientist members of the consortium in the United Kingdom.

You will both conduct a preliminary data collection about the history of the British nuclear industry, the public and policy within the broader project guidelines and write the report on the history of the British nuclear experience within the project guidelines. You will also propose a case study within the project guidelines, and then work on one of the case studies which are chosen.

The appointment will begin on or around 1 October 2015, by arrangement. It will be supported for 24 months full time. There may be scope for extending the period to 30 months through part-time working.

Among other knowledge, skills and experience, you will have:

·         Demonstrable experience and proven research record within the field of history of technology,  industry or science in the 20th century at PhD level or equivalent

·         Experience of working in a successful team.

·         Demonstrable knowledge of the history of nuclear power or other energy technologies

·         Demonstrable knowledge of British political and social history since the Second World War
