The Wallace Collection, housed in the opulent surroundings of Hertford House, contains an unrivalled display of French 18th century painting, furniture and porcelain, famed Old Masters and a spectacular display of arms and armour.
It grew out of the private collections of the first four Marquesses of Hertford during the 18th and 19th centuries, and was bequeathed to the nation in 1897 by Lady Wallace, the widow of Sir Richard Wallace, son of
the 4th Marquess.
The Library was originally established as a research library for curatorial staff but is now open to the public by appointment. It contains some 20,000 books, periodicals and exhibition catalogues on the fine and decorative arts and holds
on long-term loan the De Walden collection of rare fencing books from the 16th to the 19th century.
The Archive contains files on the foundation and history of the collection and the acquisition of its works of art as well related material in the field of French 18th century art, princely arms and armour and the history of
collecting.
Notable collections recently acquired include the personal papers of the Anglo-German art dealer, Herbert Bier (1905-1981), and the papers of Claude Blair (1922-2010) former Keeper of Metalwork at the Victoria & Albert Museum and scholar
of arms and armour.
There is no charge for this visit.
Please meet at the Information Desk in entrance vestibule. There is a cloakroom to the left of the vestibule should anyone wish to leave coats and heavy bags
The visit will include talks on the history of the library and archives followed by a tour of the library.
Tea and coffee will be provided after the tour.
** Due to restricted space in the curatorial offices, places on this visit will be limited to 8 only, although we will keep a reserve list **
