Hi,

Can you provide each of the typists with details of the required format and style?

Subject: Typing/Editing Support

Dear all,

Apologies for cross-posting.

We have been providing typing support to one of our PhD students as they have no alternative means of producing written work (they cannot use Dragon). Due to the number of hours required to support this student, we have had no option but to use a team of typists to provide all of the support required. It has been brought to our attention recently that there are some stylistic problems in the written work which the supervisor believes is a result of using different typists (the student has been with us throughout undergraduate and previous postgraduate study and this has never been mentioned before). The supervisor has suggested that we should fund a copy editor to support the student with making amendments to the content, format and style of the written work.

We have been speaking about this and feel that this may not be appropriate as the copy editor would be checking the content and accuracy of the work. Even our specialist tutors wouldn't provide this level of support and none of the NMH role descriptors would cover such a role. I was wondering if anyone else has been in this position or if anyone has any advice on what may be considered reasonable in this situation?

Many thanks,
Catherine
