I wondered if this event might be of interest to list members. Ron is very critically orientated:

The next Psychology Cultures Seminar is scheduled for 15th June 2.30-4.30 at the University of Leicester (Ken Edward’s building, Lecture Theatre 3).  Places remain free and open to all. Please email Carl Gudgeon on [log in to unmask] to book a place (attendance is compulsory for DClinPsy trainees).

Psychologists, Peace & Conflict

A good deal of social psychological theory has been concerned with issues concerning conflict and conflict reduction (e.g. social identity theory, realistic conflict theory, contact hypothesis).  Despite the wide acceptance of these perspectives they have little demonstrable ecological validity once we step outside the laboratory.   Psychology’s contributions to peace are further complicated by their long standing allegiance to the military – both here and across the Atlantic –a stance which is in turn premised on support for the capitalist status quo.  In addition, and not unrelated to the aforementioned issues, there are problems stemming from a disciplinary stance which decontextualizes human behaviour and privileges psychological data above others (e.g. historical, sociological, political, economic).  The talk will consider these (and other issues) and assess the possibilities for psychologists and psychology as a discipline to contribute to a more just world.

Dr Ron Roberts is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Kingston University. He has published numerous articles and has authored various books, most recently ‘Psychology and capitalism’ (http://www.zero-books.net/books/psychology-capitalism) and ‘The new politics of experience and the bitter herbs’ (http://www.pccs-books.co.uk/products/new-politics/).  Ron also edited the 2007 book ‘Just war’ (http://www.pccs-books.co.uk/products/just-war-psychology-and-terrorism/) in which, amongst other contributions, he co-authored a chapter on peace psychology. Ron will draw on material from this book and his continued involvement in promoting peace in Bosnia to support us in thinking how clinical psychology might become more active in preventing conflict.

Subject: #WalktheTalk2015

Hi all,

Some of you may already be aware of #walkthetalk2015 but others may not, so here’s a quick bit of background. A few of us have connected up to try and create an awareness-raising campaign aimed at drawing attention to the impact poverty has on mental health / psychological wellbeing. The goal is to affect policy change and we are focussing specifically on the benefits system, homelessness and food poverty. We will be walking the 100miles from the BPS offices in Leicester to the BPS offices in London, sleeping out along the way. We will also be talking to people who are accessing services such as food banks and homeless shelters, in order to share their stories. We will be uploading videos and blogs to the website www.walkthetalk2015.org. I’ve also attached a flyer. Please share them both as widely as you can.

Kind regards

Ste
