A special gala screening in York of the Asta Nielsen, German expressionist Hamlet from 1920/1921 may be of interest to some colleagues.

7.30pm, Saturday 9 May

Featuring Danish screen star Asta Nielsen making a memorably beautiful, funny and painful appropriative bid to be herself the Prince of Denmark.

Tortured androgyny, wry comedy, grand pathos and a few bonkers plot twists.  Asta (and those eyes!) outclass all around her on screen.

Screened with a specially composed fresh score by Robin Harris performed live in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, York.

With a short Buchanan introduction about this film’s place in the history of women as Hamlet, and a Q&A afterwards - which includes the opportunity to ask musicians Robin Harris and Laura Anstee about scoring and playing for this silent film.

Screened as part of the inaugural York International Shakespeare Festival.
