I am a very keen supporter of the OH Jiscmail service and I would even go so far as to say this is how I gain clinical supervision. Those who know me will be aware that I have been missing from the list for almost 6 months due to problems with my work area's email system. Both Anne and Karen worked hard over several months to enable me to continue accessing Jisc and equally offering any support to other Jisc members.....this is what we do! I really missed Jisc and I have had to open a new email account to be able to access emails again. I am so glad I did but without the support of both Anne and Karen I would still be Jiscmail-less and bereft! I salute you both.
Kind regards,
Rita

Now retired I have seen over the last 15yrs or so the List turn from a friendly helpful bunch of Nurses to a friendly helpful but very professional bunch of dedicated Nurse practitioners. I am convinced that the more we function as a group of Professional people the more likely eventually we will be able to be seen as separate from the hopeless NMC. Like many I landed in OH by chance but loved it from Day One. I marvel at the knowledge and expertise of the List and never felt totally alone knowing folk were out there who could help me as I always seemed to work alone. I also marvel at all the List 'supervisors' with their endless patience and knowledge and commitment of their time. The problems seem to repeat themselves such as issues with managers and HR and their understanding of what we can and can't do and my heart goes out to everyone in those situations - been there, got the tee shirt etc! Plus having to cope with the NMC who never have understood our role nor seemed to care very little to try and find out what we did as they set stupid regulations against our registration. I felt a real sense of loss when I left my registration but I remain committed to the work and future of OH. I hope the List goes on and that there will always be people like Ann and Karen to work tirelessly for us all.
I still enjoy reading the emails and wish everyone real enjoyment with your important work and may all your HR contact be good(I hope!).Sue.

Hi Surprisingly (for those that know me!!) I am one of the more silent members of JISC mainly due to time constraints, and I often wonder how Anne and Karen manage to do all they do in a day and admire them greatly for the amount of
work they both put in on behalf of the OH community as a whole, it always amazes me how quick people are to criticise others, particularly when those people give up their time voluntarily and
I just wanted to add my support for the continued work that they both do.

Although a I would love to receive remuneration I am not sure whether a fee would be allowed under the JISC rules. Appreciation of what we do is probably just as important as a payment, provided we don’t get moans. Karen gave me a brief summary of the JISC
survey and has written it up before she circulates for me to have a look at. I haven’t had the time to do that due to pressing work related issues organised. I will comment on the survey once it is circulated as there are one or two points in particular I
may want to pick up on.

I would like to make a comment about Karen. A bit of background – in addition to co-managing JISC she has her own successful consultancy, like myself and Marisa (UWS) is working with the Board of the AOHNP to look at the possibility of establishing a Faculty
of OH Nursing, joined myself and Marisa to lobby the NMC regarding their poor understanding of OH, contributes immeasurably to posting information on this list, I think she is a board member of the Soc Occ Med and is completing a PhD. I don’t know how she
has the time to pack it all into a working week, and she does it because she wants to support the profession. So, thank you Karen.

The loss of the Anne or Karen would see the end of jismail and I am sure most people refer to this site for the right reasons and use it with good intentions.

It is very disheartening to hear the conflict you have had to deal with.

In order for this to continue perhaps it should be looked at to be resourced better with time and funding by a small annual subscription fee (to cover your administration time Anne and Karen)? This would then perhaps deter those wanting to use it for recruitment
purposes as it will stream line those who really want to network and share information and practice issues.

In order to see that this is kept up and running I would love to offer to help however time is sadly greatly lacking in my life!

Perhaps you could consult the jismailers on a survey to see if they will be prepared to pay an annual subscription fee to ensure your time is allocated accordingly as it appears that like many nurses you are running on good will!

Thank you for this apology, Jane. I think Karen will appreciate this.

There are a few subscribers who are new to the list and it is unsurpristing that from time to time we have to put out a reminder ground rules

I appreciate the shock of finding yourself redundant, particularly on a return following a period of leave. I am sure I was not the only one to have written directly to the person who originally posted to indicate that we are thinking of her.

The reason Karen asked subscribers not to put job posts “on-list” is that it is not the purpose of JISC, they should be sent directly “off-list”. Some subscribers will remember that a few years ago recruiters were posting jobs on a daily basis, they were
beginning to take over the list and “Friday funnies” were the norm. We put an end to those postings as they were diluting the professionalism of this resource. They could have posted helpful information relating to OH and it was at the time of the passing
of the EqAct. Make no mistake they weren’t pink and fluffy lets support the OH practitioners by telling them about some nice jobs. Their rationale was to hit their targets enhancing their bonuses. Some recruiters make a lot of money but it depends on how successful
they are – JISC must have been like manna from Heaven to those people. At that time I received calls on my work phone number from recruiters who objected to being stopped from posting. Some verged on being abusive. Karen and I manage this list in our own
time, on top of demanding jobs and with no remuneration, and it is often a thankless task.

The list is funded through the Higher Education Funding Council as an educational (and professional) resource. As list managers we are responsibile for ensuring compliance with the ground rules misuse of the list. Postings may be audited: inappropriate postings
put the list at risk. In short it must be both professional and educational, it is not facebook. I believe that JISC-OH has the largest membership of all the JISC lists and it is international. I am a member of four JISC lists and co-manage two of them. I
have never seen the level of abruptness on those sites that I sometimes read on here or have witnessed first hand as highlighted above.

It is a requirement that one of the co-managers has to be employed in HE. That limits the number of people who can take the list on. Both Karen and I have discussed withdrawing our services, in which case the list could fold. We are both tired of the abusive
calls (as above), off-list emails including: “its not fair” “why can they say XYZ when I can’t”, “why do you admonish me but not them” - we do respond to inappropriate emails but do so off list. This evening Karen showed me an email thread from someone whose
emails are encapsulated above, and they kept sending them. Neither Karen nor I have the time nor the inclination to respond to such emails.

Just this weekend I had a request for phone advice from a JISCer, I was more than happy to offer them support and spent over an hour on the phone to them. I know my support made a difference to them and that is why I was happy to speak to them as I would
value similar support if I were in the same position and I am happy to continue to support them. If there is another academic who would be prepared to take the above flack perhaps they would like to contact me off-list to volunteer their services, be prepared
that it may make a significant dent in your free time.

I agree with both Jane and Karen's comments but Karen Coomer is correct, this support can be provided off line as I did to prevent in-boxes overflowing.
