Taking the risk of repeating what has already been said, but the
Bergenhus Castle is of course a place to visit. In central Bergen, near the
Bryggen Museum, you will find a very beautiful medieval stone church, the
Mariakirken (St. Mary’s Church). There are some other medieval churches,
standing or ruined, for example the Olavskirken (St. Olav’s), a.k.a.
Domkirken, once a Franciscan church, where King Magnus Lagabøter was buried.
There is no visible grave. Many royal graves, as well as the entire
Kristkirken (Christchurch), were demolished during the Danish
rule.
Have a nice time in lovely Bergen.

I'm afraid my
husband says we cannot go as far as Trondheim, so we thought we'd try and do a
circle to Bergen and back by a different route - probably hiring a car,
although we've also been told that the train journey is spectacular, so we may
do that one way, if we don't have a good route
back.

Historical Museum, Oslo - there is a good selection of
religious material there.
Gol stave church in the Norwegian folk museum (it is not
one of the most interesting stave churches, but is easy to get to and fairly
typical)
The best stave churches are Urnes and Borgund which are
both up in Sogn and Fjordane. You'd need to hire a car - but the scenery is
breathtaking, and the churches unique.
In Bergen, the Bryggen area has a wonderful museum
relating to the Hanseatic traders. Very close to Bergen there is also the
Fantoft stave church, which has recently been reconstructed, having been
destroyed in an arson attack about 20 years ago.
If you have time, Trondheim Cathedral is really a must
see (but not at the expense of the stave churches!).

May I crave the

We are planning
a holiday in Norway and have got as far as thinking that we will fly in
and out of Oslo, doing a round trip to Bergen (perhaps coming back by
train). I know that there are medieval wooden (?stave) churches that
one should see, to say nothing of the Oslo Viking museum but really have
little idea of where else one should go. Are there any must sees for
medievalists?
