UNDERSTANDING EVERYDAY PARTICIPATION

ARTICULATING CULTURAL VALUES

CARE EXPERIENCED YOUNG PEOPLE AND PARTICIPATION WORKSHOP

School of Museum Studies, University of Leicester, 19th June 2015: 10am - 4pm

Orthodox models of culture and the creative economy are based on a narrow definition of participation: one that captures engagement with traditional institutions such as museums and galleries but overlooks more informal activities such as community festivals and hobbies. The Understanding Everyday Participation: Articulating Cultural Values project aims to paint a broader picture of how people make their lives through culture and in particular how communities are formed and connected through participation.

Join us for a special event being held at the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester as part of the AHRC’s Connected Communities festival, where we will be discussing the theme of participation and what this means for young people growing up in care throughout the UK. Aimed at young people in care and care leavers, carers, cultural and social work practitioners, the event will include a screening of a film, created by the young women in care as part of the Understanding Everyday Participation project carried out in Gateshead, guest speakers and plenty of conversation.
