The concern is that they are earphones rather than simple plugs and that they are receiving information from a third party. Maybe unlikely in the past, but culturally becoming more likely. My personal difficulty is actually spotting this on people with long hair or religious headgear (inserted after being ID’d) – I can’t see their ears and don’t expect my invigilators to spend their time walking down the rows in exams asking people to show them their ears. It also presupposes that people with what look like hearing aids haven’t got those modified – we have no checks for this!

We have a student who we allow this for.  As long as they are standard ear plugs and the student can still hear invigilator's instructions I see no reason why we shouldn't allow this.

The responses are inconsistent – if you go to the board they will say Yes.

Hi Anna,

I raised this last year with Nick Lait and was told they’re not permitted.  It seemed very unreasonable, particularly as we had major rebuilding works going on during the main exam period.

Hi All

Just had a request for a student to use ear plugs to ‘block out the noise in an exam’.  Has anyone else ever had this request and what did you decide?    Every exam I have been in it is silent (having to play one student music because she has tinnitus and cant cope with the silence).

Advice gratefully received

Anna
