CDSA-ACEI Tanis Doe Award for Disability Study and Culture Awards
June 4, 10:15-11:15am, Room LMX 219

English Recipients: Patricia Seth & Marie Slark

As disability activists, Patricia and Marie's work over the past six years has both challenged and educated the Canadian public regarding some of the grotesque practices to which people with developmental disabilities have been subjected over the past two centuries. They were the lead plaintiffs in the precedent-setting class action lawsuit against the Ontario government on behalf of former residents of the Huronia Regional Centre, a total institution designed to warehouse people labeled with developmental disabilities. In their search for historical justice, Patricia and Marie have shown extraordinary courage and leadership. Their willingness to speak the truth about their institutional past has made manifest new communities of survivors who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to engage with one another and share their own traumatic lived experiences.

French Recipient: Dr. Patrick Fougeyrollas
Patrick is a social anthropologist and Associate Professor at the Department of Anthropology, Laval University. Founding member and president of the International Network on the Disability Creation Process (INDCP), he played a major role in establishing the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Research in Rehabilitation and Social Integration (CIRRIS). He directed and took part in numerous studies and research projects. He has published profusely and sits on several national and international boards of directors and expert committees in the areas of rehabilitation, integration of people with disabilities, and the revision of the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps (ICIDH). Patrick has played an essential part in the cultural changes surrounding the concept of Disability that have taken place in past decades

CDSA-ACEI gratefully acknowledges the support of the Université de Saint-Boniface. In supporting this award, the Université wishes to underscore the rich legacy and cultural heritage of Tanis Doe and to promote social justice.
