Dear All,

I’m working with a student with SpLDs studying Osteopathy who is concerned about aspects of the practical exams.  The student’s ability to process auditory information is particularly affected and in practical situations has to take some extra time to ensure that they have the correct meaning (e.g. left or right or the particular muscle or muscle group to be worked on).  When the student is stressed or rushed, they make mistakes and have worked on the wrong side for example.  The student is concerned that if they take time to process this information, it will be interpreted as confusion.  The student has repeated the question back to examiners to check they have heard everything correctly but has said that they haven’t been given an answer.  I was just wondering if anyone has worked with a student on an Osteopathy or medical course that has similar difficulties and whether or not adjustments such as thinking time/repeating questions in a practical exam were felt reasonable?  Additionally, is there anything else that you have found useful when supporting students in similar situations?

Many thanks,

Catherine
