Just another reminder about the opening of a project called Urban Organisms which explores urban food sustainability. It opens at 7-11pm tonight (as part of the Late Shows) and runs to 13th June at the NewBridge Project, Newcastle.

Urban Organisms - Opening today from 7pm

Preview: Saturday 16 May, 7-11pm (as part of The Late Shows)

 

The NewBridge Project presents Urban Organisms, an exhibition and programme of events that examine and creatively explore food sustainability in cities. 

Working across a range of approaches the project will provide a space for conversation and ideas that aim to connect up the environmental, socio-economic and political dimensions of urban food production and consumption. Urban Organisms proposes creative solutions for urban food production and sustainability in Newcastle City Centre. 

 

The Project Space will host film screenings, participatory workshops, walks and talks from UK and internationally based artists. An exhibition on the subject of urban food sustainability will run alongside the events in NewBridge Project Space featuring work by Fernando Garcia Dory, N55, Magdalena Starska, Mikey Tomkins, Caitlin & Andrew Webb Ellis and Julia Wilmott.

As part of the project, Mikey Tomkins has created a new map outlining the potential spaces for food growing in the central area of Newcastle. Join him on a tour of these sites using this map to explore how the current city centre could be transformed to support multiple food growing practices, including aquaponics, beekeeping and vegetable growing. As an aid, Mikey has created an ‘Edible Map’ of Newcastle, which depicts examples of urban agriculture, amongst its rooftops and open spaces. The Edible Map is used to engage with residents as participants, in imagining Newcastle as an edible urban landscape a place where food growing is an everyday occurrence.
