Foreign Fields: The Recovery and Commemoration of War Dead in Post-Colonial Contexts

Thursday 17th September 2015, Kingston University, London

This one day symposium will explore the recovery and commemoration of military dead from a broad range of modern conflicts, linked by the theme that these particular soldiers were fighting as part of an imperial or colonial force, died fighting in a colonial conflict, or their remains now rest in a country they are linked to by a shared colonial past. This group of war dead are associated with specific complexities and challenges relating to the cultural and political relationships of colonialism and imperialism, the legacy of which still reverberates strongly in the present day.

This interdisciplinary event includes contributions from archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, art historians and forensic scientists. It will consider the recovery and identification of human remains, the art and archaeology of funerary sites and monuments, memorial practices, and historical narratives and discourses. Some of the broad range of case studies under discussion include the South African Labour Corps and the wreck of the Mendi; Imperialism in the Balkans and its legacy in modern conflict; the commemoration of Jamaican and Indian soldiers in the World Wars; the Romusha forced labourers of World War II; and the recovery of ANZAC dead on the Western Front. Confirmed speakers include Jonathon Black, Dominiek Dendooven, Elizabeth Oliver, Maja Petrović-Šteger, Layla Renshaw, Nicholas Saunders, Graham Scott, Richard Smith and Vron Ware.

Registration fee is £25 (includes tea, coffee and lunch). Registration deadline is Sunday 6th September 2015.
