Good to hear from you Martin. I wonder how typical your experience is of institutions in the UK. Is there anyone else out there in the same position? Or anyone who has actually tackled the updates?

Hi

I’m Martin, Metadata Manager from the University of Liverpool. Here are my responses to the initial set of questions:

Q1: Were you aware of the RDA update? How did you become aware of it? Should have been but haven’t been paying enough attention to the RDA list!
Q2: To what extent were you aware of the changes before the Update was released? Not very
Q3: What is your plan for implementing the Update? When we actually apply RDA
Q4: What are the barriers to implementation in your institution? Deprioritization of cataloguing from Senior Managers, Heavy reduction of staff involved in cataloguing, priority of changing library system
Q5: What impact do you anticipate the changes will have on workflows? Very little, as with RDA even when we implement it
Q6: What are your views on the frequency and scope of RDA Updates? Doesn’t seem too heavy, but then we’re not using it yet – I’m partially here to see what everyone else thinks, and to get an idea what kind of workforce everyone else has for maintaining catalogues, keeping up with changes etc.

I guess I’m not part of the main target group here ☺

Cheers

Martin

Subject: [CIG-E-FORUM] CIG e-forum: RDA Updates and Developments: Welcome

Good morning! Welcome to the CIG e-forum on RDA updates and developments. I’ll be co-moderating along with my colleague, Thurstan Young, and Bernadette O’Reilly (Bodleian Libraries). Gordon Dunsire, Chair of the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA, will also be joining us during the course of the day. We’re delighted to have a number of people signed up to the e-forum and are looking forward to sharing knowledge, experience and questions. We’ll have a lunch break between 12.30 and 2.00, but please feel free to keep posting over this time as well. We will be wrapping up at 4pm.

Broadly, the day is divided into a morning and afternoon session. We have suggested some questions and issues for discussion in this session.

Tuesday morning session 10.00-12.30: RDA Update
Q1: Were you aware of the RDA update? How did you become aware of it?
Q2: To what extent were you aware of the changes before the Update was released?
Q3: What is your plan for implementing the Update?
Q4: What are the barriers to implementation in your institution?
Q5: What impact do you anticipate the changes will have on workflows?
Q6: What are your views on the frequency and scope of RDA Updates?

These will help give some direction to our discussions but they aren’t set in stone, so don't feel you can't post something you want to talk about if you are only around at a particular time of day.

If you are posting about something new, please put a relevant title in your subject so that those participating can keep track of conversations more easily.

On a practical note it might be worth me mentioning at the start of the day that messages sometimes take a little while to appear on JISCmail lists. Iif your message doesn't appear straight away then please don't worry or re-send. We're not moderating the list, so it will get through.

So, to kick us off for today, please feel free to introduce yourselves to the list and let us know where you are with the Update.

Alan
