Dear All,

I wondered if there was any more advice out there on this issue or labs that offer alternative methods for patients on ursodeoxycholate.

We are using Diazyme method and saw an elevated result yesterday that was not linear upon dilution. Patient was on ursodeoxycholate.

I have seen some of the enzymatic method’s IFU indicate that they are not suitable for samples from patients on ursodeoxycholate, whereas others don’t mention it (including Diazyme).

My questions are:

Does anyone know if they are all affected or if some are some aren’t?

Does anyone have an alternative method (?mass spec) which can be used? (I vaguely remember one of the Trainee Medal Award talks at Focus a few years ago which I think may have been a method development project for this).

Patient has now stopped ursodeoxycholate (before they saw this result), how long is it likely to take for the ursodeoxycholate taken to be cleared from the circulation?

Thanks for any advice.

Best wishes

Brian

We presented data at Focus 2013 looking at interference from ursodeoxycholic acid (see attached). Unfortunately the method groups were not split for manufacturer at the time. We are currently looking at the data to see if we are able to identify the manufacturers each participant used. I will post this information at a later date if available.

Dear list members,

The gynaecologists complain that pregnant women on ursodeoxycholate treatment now get higher total bile acids results than previously. This may have coincided with that our lab changed from the Randox Thio-NADH assay to the Diazyme assay. Does anyone know if the Randox Thio-NADH total bile acids assay is less sensitive to ursodeoxycholic acid compared to the Diazyme assay?

Best regards
