Postgraduate transitions: exploring disciplinary practice

The Higher Education Academy has commissioned a team led by the Careers Research & Advisory Centre (CRAC) to investigate:

1. Why some institutions have higher transition rates into postgraduate study than other comparable institutions

2. Are there disciplinary practices within institutions that facilitate transitions into postgraduate study that we can learn from as a sector?

A project description is available here:

http://www.crac.org.uk/194462/Current-research.html

and information will also be on the HEA website soon.

We are keen to learn about any existing initiatives - such as innovation work or interventions - which aim to enhance progression into postgraduate study and especially where there has been evaluation of practice. We are interested in any work you may have undertaken, whether in partnership with other institutions, at the institutional level, or especially at faculty or departmental level (or even smaller scale initiatives).

So if you have examples of initiatives that you have tried, whether they worked or not, we would find this insightful. You are receiving this request as we are inviting academic staff to contribute, via a variety of networks including CRAC, Vitae and the HEA.

We would warmly welcome any submissions you can make in this regard. We will treat all submissions as confidential, unless your institution specifically wishes to be named as a potential case study.

At a later stage in the research, we will ask a selected number of institutions to act as fieldwork sites for institutional visits, in which we will undertake in-depth investigations with academic and other staff, and students. This is another approach we are taking to develop case studies so that good practice can be shared with the sector.

Please contact us with your evidence or case study/ies, or if you would like to volunteer to be a fieldwork institution, or with any further questions you may have. The first point of contact is our Project Director, Dr Robin Mellors-Bourne at CRAC: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
