medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Benedict did not like monks becoming priests, or priests becoming monks and says so in his Rule (chapters 60 and 62). This is not surprising; a Priest's work is not the same as the seeking for God that is a Monk's vocation. Two of the Augustinian canons from Bradenstoke became priests after the abbey was dissolved. One locally, the other the Dean of the new Diocese of Bristol. But then Augustinians were rather less enclosed than Benedictines. This monk Rector was dispensed to hold a second benefice or office (this is from the Victoria County History for Essex, the relevant information taken from Cal. Papal Reg). How common was it for Benedictine monks to hold benefices and, presumably, carry out parochial duties?
