IN CONVERSATION WITH NICK GOLD
Hosted by Dr Simone Krüger

Known as the architect of the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon, Nick Gold and his small company, World Circuit Records, has been the force behind some of the most successful World Music projects of the last two decades: Grammy-winning Buena Vista Social Club from 1997, which has sold eight million copies worldwide; Talking Timbuktu, Ali Farka Touré’s Grammy-winning album with Ry Cooder from 1994; the reunion of Orchestra Baobab, a Latin-flavoured Senegalese band of the 1970’s and 80’s; and Grammy Award-winning albums In the Heart of the Moon (2005) by Malian singer-guitarist Ali Farka Touré and kora player Toumani Diabaté, followed by their second Grammy-winning album Ali and Toumani in 2010.The typical World Circuit album is high quality and high concept, with rich and beautiful packaging that reflects the care taken with the recording. The personal touch and attention to detail is at the core of the label’s ethos and its success. Capturing the essence of the music is a priority for the hands-on label boss who also produces many of his artists’ records. Joining World Circuit in 1986 whilst recording and distributing world music before it became World Music, Nick Gold is now a legend on the scene, and the records that he produces sell millions on a global scale. Join us for a unique opportunity to hear Nick Gold talk about World Music, the birth of Buena Vista Social Club, music production, marketing, running a label, traveling, musical fusion, West African and Cuban music, and more.
