Book Symposium on Alan Patten’s Equal Recognition: The Moral Foundations of Minority Rights (Princeton
University Press, 2014)
8 June 2015 (10:00-18:00)
Venue: Institute of Philosophy - KU Leuven, Leuven (Belgium).
The goal of this symposium is to discuss Alan Patten’s approach
to multiculturalism, as developed in Equal Recognition: The Moral Foundations of Minority Rights (Princeton University Press,
2014). This book has been described as “the most important contribution to the philosophy of cultural diversity since Will Kymlicka's Multicultural Citizenship” (Philippe Van Parijs). The
book focuses on issues of cultural recognition and the importance of treating diversity in plural societies equally. In addressing topics like immigrant accommodation, multiculturalism, linguistic justice and secessionist conflicts, it takes seriously some
of the most controversial debates in normative political theory and, also, in our current societies.
