We are very excited to present our first e-newsletter to the digital preservation community. This newsletter will regularly update you on what’s going on in the PERICLES project. You’ll also find trending discussions, blogs, events and useful resources. You receive this newsletter because we believe you are interested in information and updates on digital preservation. What is PERICLES?
PERICLES is a four-year Integrated Project (2013-2017) funded by the European Union under its Seventh Framework Programme (ICT Call 9).
The project aims to address the challenge of ensuring that digital content remains accessible in an environment that is subject to continual change. This can encompass not only technological change, but also changes in semantics, academic or professional practice, or society itself, which can affect the attitudes and interests of the various stakeholders that interact with the content. PERICLES Status update

We are currently half-way through the project  (ends 31 January 2017) and in the last two years we have done some work in the following areas:

• Describing the digital ecosystem, its entities and dependencies
• Creation of a conceptual model of the dependencies
• Defining an architectural framework for the test-beds
• First evaluation of progress
• Use case scenario development
• Identifying and capturing information necessary for content reuse

Alongside the development of a conceptual and formal model, based on linked data principles (LRM) for representing dynamic preservation ecosystems, PERICLES is also producing a range of components – models, tools, policies, architectural approaches, etc. – that can be used independently in different environments to support a range of preservation requirements.
Among the recent releases is the PERICLES Extraction tool (PET), a modular toolkit for extracting Significant Environment Information (SEI), which now publically available under an open source licence.
A further tool is under development for encapsulating this contextual information in various ways, for example as part of an archival information package (AIP).
We are also currently investigating possible approaches to guiding and partially automating the appraisal processes.

PERICLES draws project partners from several different disciplines & domains. In these videos a number of these partners are introduced and you can hear more about their role in the project and what they have found most engaging in their work so far.

The evolution of semantics refers to possible shifts in the interpretation of a concept over time and/or contrasts in its interpretation between user communities, due to linguistic, socio-cultural or psychological factors. In literature, the above phenomenon is covered by expressions like “semantic change”, “semantic shift”, “semantic decay”, and sometimes as “concept drift”, all of which are categorized under the umbrella term of “semantic drift”.
