Societal Dimensions of Organised Crime
Organised crime is an umbrella term for a host of criminal practices, such as trafficking illegal goods and people, extortion, corruption and kidnapping.
Organised crime is a global phenomenon and many criminal organisations and networks operate transnationally. Despite most countries being affected by some form of organised crime, it seems to manifest in different ways in different societies. Understanding
these societal dimensions of organised crime will help to understand the phenomenon as well as how to combat it.
The conference will be held at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) in Rome, Italy, on the 23-24 September 2015.
Contributions are invited on the following and related topics:
• The structure and organisation of socially embedded crime
(e.g. extortion, corruption) • Social, economic and cultural conditions beneficial for organised crime
• Explanatory accounts for the success or failure of specific criminal organisations
• Migration of criminal organisations and networks between countries and sectors
• Computational studies of organised crime and extortion
• Databases and data mining tools of criminal and judicial data
• Counter-policies for organised crime and their effectiveness
• Assessments of the expected future for global organised crime • Analyses of the interface between organised crime
and society • Policy focussed research on organised crime
Legal, criminal justice, policing, criminological, computational, and other perspectives may be employed. Participants from academia, policy and
operational organisations are all very welcome.
Contributions in the form of extended abstracts (up to 1500 words) or abstracts for posters (up to 500 words) are welcome. A selection of papers will
be published in a journal special issue. The conference will also include round table and panel discussions. Suggestions for these should be submitted as brief abstracts outlining aims, scope and potential addressees and participants. For any queries and informal
discussions please contact [log in to unmask].
