Calling all criminologists! Please note that the British Society of Criminology Conference 2015 at Plymouth University has extended its deadline for abstracts and early bird registration. Please visit our website at: Click Here

The conference theme is ‘Criminology: Voyages of critical discovery’ with the aims of Engaging Debate, Challenging Orthodoxy and/or Promoting Innovation.

Reflecting the conference theme, our plenary sessions explore global issues through discussion and debate. At the postgraduate conference our Keynote Speaker, Professor Joe Sim (Liverpool John Moores University) will inspire students by discussing engagement in ‘Public Criminology’. During the main conference Keynote speakers will present their ideas as part of a panel and discuss them in the round: Professor Elliott P. Currie (University of California) will discuss ‘New Directions in Criminology’ with Professor Rowland Atkinson (Sheffield University), Professor Kathleen Daly (Griffith University, Brisbane) will engage in debate with Professor Kieran McEvoy (Queen’s University, Belfast) on ‘Re-discovering Restorative Justice’, and Professor Mary Bosworth (Oxford University), Professor Sharon Pickering (Monash University, Melbourne) and Professor Ben Bowling (King’s College, London) will discuss ‘Crimmigration: policing and punishing migrants in a global world'. This exciting format for the conference is intended to encourage and motivate dynamic subsequent parallel sessions.

Societal Dimensions of Organised Crime

Organised crime is an umbrella term for a host of criminal practices, such as trafficking illegal goods and people, extortion, corruption and kidnapping. Organised crime is a global phenomenon and many criminal organisations and networks operate transnationally. Despite most countries being affected by some form of organised crime, it seems to manifest in different ways in different societies. Understanding these societal dimensions of organised crime will help to understand the phenomenon as well as how to combat it.

The conference will be held at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) in Rome, Italy, on the 23-24 September 2015.

Contributions are invited on the following and related topics:

• The structure and organisation of socially embedded crime (e.g. extortion, corruption) • Social, economic and cultural conditions beneficial for organised crime
• Explanatory accounts for the success or failure of specific criminal organisations
• Migration of criminal organisations and networks between countries and sectors

• Computational studies of organised crime and extortion
• Databases and data mining tools of criminal and judicial data
• Counter-policies for organised crime and their effectiveness
• Assessments of the expected future for global organised crime • Analyses of the interface between organised crime and society • Policy focussed research on organised crime

Legal, criminal justice, policing, criminological, computational, and other perspectives may be employed. Participants from academia, policy and operational organisations are all very welcome.

Contributions in the form of extended abstracts (up to 1500 words) or abstracts for posters (up to 500 words) are welcome. A selection of papers will be published in a journal special issue. The conference will also include round table and panel discussions. Suggestions for these should be submitted as brief abstracts outlining aims, scope and potential addressees and participants. For any queries and informal discussions please contact [log in to unmask].
