I include the dedicatee if I think it's relevant to the collection or my library in some way e.g. it's dedicated to the collection donor / a former principal of the House etc. So almost as if it were provenance (but not quite). Can be a tricky decision on a catalogue shared with other libraries, though.

I often include information about dedicatees when I catalogue historical medical monographs, as dedications can supply useful information about
members of the medical profession.

Not a silly question at all, Jennifer. I sometimes include access points for well-known dedicatees or for dedicatees in records for books by well-known authors.

There wasn't anything that jumped out at me, apart from the fact that a couple of you transcripted the commas, while others left it out. I haven't had an opportunity to do a full record, unfortunately, but I did leave them in.

This might be a silly question, but I wondered whether there might be any circumstances under which you'd include the dedicatee (James Shaen) as a 700 field. Given interest in provenance & associaions, I wasn't sure whether this might be relevant in some cases. It feels perhaps a bit excessive, but I can imagine there might be times when readers might be interested in information like that.

Best,

Jennifer

I think the records look pretty similar.

Those of you who don't have a lot of rare books cataloguing experience, is there anything in the records that looks unusual to you? Or do you have any other questions or comments?

When I created my record I thought for this exercise I would include citations/references in the 510 in the format of the latest edition of the Standard Citation Forms for Rare Materials Cataloging (available free online: http://rbms.info/scf/ ) to see what it was like even though we actually still follow the previous version within the ESTC. What do you think? It's probably clearer for users not necessarily familiar with these reference works as such but I must say it does take longer to input.
