I didn’t include the name as an access point because I wasn’t sure whether my transcription of it was correct or not but that’s just my personal decision. If somebody did a keyword search they would still be able to find the record because of the 561 note.

In this case due to in-house guidelines I wouldn’t add an access point in my day-to-day work, either, so I just didn’t think of it. (Every access point that we add to records at the British Library should have a NACO authority record; if there is no existing one, we have to create one and I wouldn’t want to create one based on such little information).

I also noticed Iris that you didn’t put the signature name in the 700 – is this because you were unsure if it was accurate?

I did add mine to the 700, even though I wasn’t sure, in the off chance that if we had something else in the collection with the same signature that it might bring them together.  Or a researcher looking for a particular individual might find it useful.

Do people think this is a good idea – is it better to add a name that we aren’t sure of, than no name at all?

Thanks, Karen.

I was struggling with that inscription, too. Does anybody have any other suggestions for the inscription?

Here is my record 2.

I’m not very good on handwriting, so I have probably got the signature name wrong!

Please, start sending in your record 2 examples now but feel free to keep on commenting on record 1.

If you have any other practical cataloguing questions, please, submit them for discussion.

I think the records look pretty similar.

Those of you who don’t have a lot of rare books cataloguing experience, is there anything in the records that looks unusual to you? Or do you have any other questions or comments?

When I created my record I thought for this exercise I would include citations/references in the 510 in the format of the latest edition of the Standard Citation Forms for Rare Materials Cataloging (available free online: http://rbms.info/scf/ ) to see what it was like even though we actually still follow the previous version within the ESTC. What do you think? It’s probably clearer for users not necessarily familiar with these reference works as such but I must say it does take longer to input.
