Hi Bronwen
Based on the publication Wer ist?, 1911, Library of Congress gives his date of death as 1911 (birth: 1839). Oxford Companion to Photography does the same, but both also give his first name as Raimund. Is this the same person? Raimund was also a photographer and soldier active in Japan, so unless there were brothers it seems unlikely to me that they would be two of them.
There are differences in the spelling of his surname between these sources (LC has Rathenitz), but this is common with Austrian names of a Slavic root, of course.
Hopes this helps!
Janet (British Library)

Subject: Death date for Franz von Stillfried-Ratenicz
Dear All,
Can anyone help verify the date of death for the Austrian photographer and army captain Franz von Stillfried-Ratenicz who was active in Japan running a photography studio in the late 1890s.
He is mentioned in the publication `Photography in Japan 1853-1912' (Tuttle Press, 2014) by Terry Bennett.
If anyone holds this publication - no holdings are listed on COPAC - I would be very grateful if they could check and verify the date of death.
Many thanks
