NIHR RESEARCH METHODS INTERNSHIP IN MEDICAL STATISTICS
(JUNE– AUGUST 2015)
Centre for Biostatistics & The School of Nursing Midwifery and Social Work

Applications are invited for a two month summer internship at the Centre for Biostatistics and School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work at the University of Manchester. The internship is funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) for 2 months starting mid-June and will be based in the Jean McFarlane building, Oxford Road, Manchester.

The intern will gain practical experience of the work of a statistician working in clinical research in the public sector, whilst developing their understanding of statistical methods. The intern will be introduced to some fundamental aspects of this role including: interpreting and processing clinical data, performing analysis using statistical software and working on research projects (whose data are related to wound healing research provided by the Wounds Research Group).

The internship will be based at the Centre for Biostatistics and will be jointly supervised by Dr Chris Foley and Professor Chris Roberts from the Centre for Biostatistics. Additional guidance will be provided by Dr Jo Dumville and Professor Nicky Cullum of the Wounds Research Group in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work.

The successful candidate will be a home or EU undergraduate student at a UK university. They could currently be studying mathematics or statistics. However, undergraduates from other fields (e.g. economics or physics) who have quantitative skills and a familiarity with statistical ideas may also apply.

The position is open to undergraduates who are currently in the second year of their degree (or the third year of a 4 year degree). The total remuneration for the two month placement is £3,500.

Application Procedure
As part of the application process we are asking applicants to write a short critical appraisal of the clinical trial “Use of Probiotic Lactobacillus Preparation To Prevent Diarrhoea Associated With Antibiotics: Randomised Double Blind Placebo Controlled Trial” Hickson, D’Souza, Muthu, Rogers, Want, Rajkumar & Bulpitt British Medical Journal 2007;335:80. The PDF version of the article can be found at http://www.bmj.com/content/335/7610/80. Please note that there are other electronic versions of this paper on the BMJ website and also online responses by readers.
Using not more than 500 words discuss whether you consider the researchers have shown that a probiotic drink can successfully reduce diarrhoea associated with taking antibiotics.

In addition to the critical appraisal please send the following:

·                     A covering letter explaining why you are interested in the internship

·                     Your CV including details and marks, where available, of the undergraduate course modules that you will have completed by the end of the 2014-15 academic year

·                     The name and email address of two academic referees from your university

Applications are invited up to and including 24th April 2015 and should be sent by email to [log in to unmask] with the subject line NIHR Internship Application.
