PhD Studentship in Vaccine Safety in Pregnancy


In collaboration with Public Health England
( https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/public-health-england)  (PHE), the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
( http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/)  (LSHTM) has been awarded funding from the National Institute for Health Research
( http://www.nihr.ac.uk/)  (NIHR) and the Department of Health to create a Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Immunisation. The objective of the HPRU is to facilitate world-class research that will impact directly on policy and enhance health protection through vaccination in the NHS. The HPRU focuses specifically on research training and provides opportunities for students to undertake a research degree on topical questions that will feed directly intonational policy making.
The PhD candidate will be working within the Electronic Health Records research theme.The strategy for this theme is to make novel use of electronic health data to estimate the burden of vaccine-preventable diseases, identify the determinants of vaccine uptake, measure vaccine effectiveness and assess vaccine safety.
Funding is available for a full-time PhD studentship on vaccine safety in pregnancy.The position will be held jointly between the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health
( http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/eph/index.html)  at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Immunisation Department at Public Health England (PHE). The studentship will be for three years.Financial support
This award includes payment of fees, at the Home/EU rate, and an annual tax-free stipend of approximately GBP 19,400 for three years (2015/16 rate tobe confirmed).

Essential: A Masters degree (or equivalent training) in Epidemiology or in Medical Statistics (with a strong Epidemiology component), awarded at a high grade
 Evidence of excellent quantitative skills
 An awareness of the biological basis of disease
 Demonstrable attention to detail
 The ability to work to deadlines
 Excellent oral and written communication skills
 An interest in vaccine-preventable infections in the UK

Desirable: Ability to manage large datasets
 Fluency in STATA
 Experience in working with population-based electronic health record data
