This is a current book-research interest of mine, and I can recommend the books mentioned. Christian Rätsch in particular is fond of henbane and has been known to brew henbane-based beer. [German accent] "Hops iz a depressant!" [/German accent] Smoking, however, although not historical pre-16th century, is perhaps the best way to approach henbane.
