Annual Cycling and Society Research Symposium

14th and 15th September 2015, Manchester and Salford

Cycling in the city and for the city

The symposium
The 12th Annual Cycling and Society Research Symposium is being jointly hosted by the University of Manchester and the University of Salford.

Following the success of last year’s event in Newcastle, researchers are invited to contribute to a two-day event to bring together the latest thinking and evidence on the relationship between cycling, society and the built environment.

The symposium offers an opportunity for researchers, policy makers, transport authorities, urban planners, campaigners and other practitioners to learn about and discuss issues

The details of the symposium will be finalised in the coming months, but it is expected that it will feature:

  • Presentations from researchers and PhD students, with time for questions and discussion
  • Planner and campaigner viewpoints on work to boost cycling, particularly in relation to Greater Manchester
  • Tour(s) of current and proposed cycle infrastructure
  • Conference dinner and networking opportunities
  • A conference website with presentations available to download (where permission is given)

Greater Manchester
With Greater Manchester’s Better by Cycle programme of rolling out cycling investment throughout the conurbation and an active cycle campaigning culture, this location promises to be a stimulating setting for debate. Gabriele Schliwa (Manchester Cycling Lab) and Dr Graeme Sherriff (Sustainable Housing and Urban Studies Unit), this year’s organisers, are active in cycling research and have experience across the academic, public and NGO sectors.

One day of the symposium will be in Manchester city centre and the other will be at Salford’s Media City, the new northern home of the BBC. Both locations are accessible by bike and also offer good rail and Metrolink connections.

Costs
We aim to make the conference accessible to all, although there is likely to be a nominal cost to cover catering.

The organisers would welcome submissions of 300 word abstracts for 20 minute presentations from social science research relating to the following broad areas:

  • Cycling in the city – including social practices, training, skills, behaviour and culture
  • Cycling for the city – including public policies, promotion, public health and liveable cities
  • Cycling economy – including: retail, services, hire, logistics
  • Planning and governance for cycling – including infrastructure, traffic management, route planning, GIS.

Summary timeline
  • 5pm Monday 4th May 2015 – deadline for abstract submissions
  • 1st June – presenters notified
