On Friday, a divided Supreme Court ruled the federal government could
destroy the last of the data once contained in the now-defunct federal
long-gun registry. The registry, which was abolished by act of Parliament
in 2012, tracked which licenced Canadians possessed which duly registered
non-restricted firearms (typically, unremarkable shotguns and rifles).

After the registry was scrapped, almost all those records were swiftly
deleted. The data relating to guns owned by Quebecers, however, was
preserved by a court order, while the courts considered the province’s
claim that it had a legal right to the data — to be used, it said, as the
basis of its own provincial long-gun registry.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
