I spoke with the UK organiser of DataKind and met yesterday with two of their active members in Leeds. I feel they may well be responsive to something along the lines of what Rachel says, perhaps as a joint project. JOHN

Thanks Hetan,

Very useful.

I've been thinking increasingly that one of the things that Radstats could do (even could do with its money, as well as or instead of a book...) is to organise something like Datakind but with a more explicitly radical focus (so organisations seeking support would not have to be charities, but could be politically oriented campaign groups - who do not qualify for charitable status). This could primarily involve online matching (we could develop a site as part of radstats to which organisations/people can come with data needs and others with data skills/interests), but it could also involve real world activities, like a datadive to run before/after a conference.

Just a thought.

Rachel.

Dear John,

The RSS has a partnership with Datakind UK as part of our Statisticians for Society initiative:

http://www.statslife.org.uk/members-area/statisticians-for-society

Whilst I'm on, members of this list may be interested in the RSS campaign #ParliamentCounts whereby you can contact all your parliamentary candidates through our easy to use web tool and get them to pledge they will take some statistical training if they get elected: www.rss.org.uk/lobby

We have already had many positive pledges from parliamentary candidates.

I hope many of you will take action and also will publicise the campaign (#ParliamentCounts for social media).

Best,

Hetan

Does anybody know anything about DataKind? They work with community
organisations and their data needs, and in some ways sound like a latterday
Radical Statistics.

They are mainly in London, but have a big event soon in Leeds. Please let
me know if interested, or if you have any info on this group.

Thanks.

Hello all,

Data kind is technically based in NYC, but they have chapters all over
(including a very active one in London).  I believe they also have a
relationship with the University of Chicago (but couldn't find details
about that on their webpage, so perhaps it was a short term
collaboration?).  Founder Jake Porway is a good statistician and is, I
think, doing good things, but I fear that the results from the
individual chapters are somewhat mixed.

My concern (as a statistician who works at a non-profit) is that the
datakind engagements are sometimes insufficiently deep to truly benefit
the NGOs they work with.  I know this is a specific concern of Jake's,
and I know he is working to foster more long-term volunteer engagements,
but this is the root of my concern about the mixed results from
different chapters - I think the chapters vary in their commitment to
understanding the context, complexity, and subtlety of an NGO's data
before diving in and offering a simplistic analysis.  I can't speak to
the London chapter specifically.

Generally speaking, I think datakind's efforts would absolutely benefit
from more involvement from folks like those on this list!

Just my two cents.
