Sarah, I know that in addition to being a SCPHN you are also registered as an Occupational Psychologist with the BPS. I recall you telling me that getting that registration was like joining the “Magic Circle”. You are probably one of the most well qualified mental health specialist practicing within OH nursing.

Thanks for your constructive feedback.
I totally agree when in the field of work the skills will be honed into the area of work.
The context I was speaking of was more for widespread work over a variety of contracts.
Finally it was not intended to single an individual out.

I also disagree, if an OHA is working within an industry that has no issues with noise etc, but perhaps has a high level of ‘stress’, sickness absence and foreign travel for example, I would want to see that the OHA has the appropriate skills to undertake the tasks of her role - why would they waste their time and money doing audio and spiro courses that they may never use? Instead they might do a legal update, mental health study day and would certainly need an imms course.



If of course they moved to a different role, they might need to up skill as required.



A Specialist in my opinion is just that - a Specialist in the field that they are working? With the ability to state when something is outside of that remit.



Sarah - absolutely no need to feel ashamed, perhaps its an opportunity for us all to look at the tasks we undertake and ensure we are fully competent?

I have been seeking an OHA / technician in the London / South area and I have just come across a Reg SCPHN- OH (Reg 2012) who has never had training or done Spirometry or audiometry!!

I am astounded! Surely this is the bread and butter of OH?

I have advised this person as a matter of priority to seek training and experience in this area as even if not hands on they should be able to  understand and supervise the interpretations.

 
Can I ask the jist list your thoughts???
